The Federal Convention, also known as the "Constitutional Convention" met in Philadelphia
during a period of time from May 1787 through September 1787 for the stated purpose of amending
the first constitution of the United States, "The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union."
Expecting their debate to become raucous and knowing it would be impossible to amend the current
constitution, the delegates voted unanimously to work behind closed doors and to keep the public at
bay while they developed a a new constitution. Madison and others were aware that it would be necessary
